Understanding Your Child’s Coach: It’s Not About Favouritism, It’s About Connection

April 24, 2025by Gems Athletics

As parents, we often witness how differently our children respond to the same rules, expectations, and even conversations. One child might need space when upset, while another might be able to talk things through right away. Though our values and parenting remain consistent, the way we communicate shifts to meet our children where they are. Coaching works much the same way.

At Gems, our coaches get to know your child—not just as an athlete, but as a person. They learn what motivates them, how they respond to feedback, and what helps them grow. Sometimes, from the outside, this can look like favouritism, but in truth, it’s simply individualized coaching.

Your child’s coach might give one athlete a pep talk and another a quiet high-five. That’s not picking favourites—it’s understanding who needs what to thrive. Just like parenting, great coaching isn’t one-size-fits-all.

If your child ever expresses concern or confusion about how they’re being coached, we encourage open dialogue. Reach out. Set up a time to chat with the coach. Communication is key, and we are always here to support both athletes and parents.

Lastly, keep in mind that children, especially in a high-energy, emotional environment like cheer, might interpret a situation differently than it was intended. Even as adults, we misread tone or body language—so it’s natural that kids still learning how to process emotions might do the same.

We’re all on the same team—working together to build confident, resilient athletes. Thank you for trusting us with your kids. We don’t take that lightly.
