Cheer is a physical and competitive sport wherein its athletes learn and implement jumps, dance, stunts and tumbling. They hone their skills and techniques in an effort to consistently perfect their craft and compete at various local, national and international competitions throughout the Season. Cheer focuses on flexibility, endurance, strength and coordination and is an excellent way to build self-confidence, develop friendships and set personal goals as an individual and team member.
The competitive cheer goal is to lay it all on the mat! Just like gymnasts, they are awarded points for difficulty, technique, creativity and sharpness. The more difficult a skill or a stunt, the sharper and more in-sync the motions, the better the score. Cheer is a team sport so without cooperation and synchronization, first place is out of reach.
At Gems Athletics we believe in placing athletes on levels that they have mastered & can compete stress free at any given time. We strive to form competitive teams based on an athletes ENTIRE skill set. We will try to match up athletes by level as best we can while keeping in mind that stunting, pyramids, dance, motions & age are factors as well. Some will be stronger tumblers than others, some will contribute more with stunts than others. We choose our teams based on the positions that we need to fill (bases, tops, thirds, tumblers etc) in order to field the strongest teams possible.
The All Star Competitive Team Season runs from June to April with team tryouts beginning in May. The registration deadline to join a team is September 15th.
The Prep Teams are an 8-month commitment and athletes will train from September –April.
Cheer is the ultimate team sport & requires consistent attendance to be successful. During the competitive Season (Sept. – May) practices are mandatory. We expect that all efforts are made to attend team practices & that families take their commitment to competiive cheer seriously. If your athlete is absent from practice, it negatively impacts the team, & may effect their role in the routine.
The 4 practices leading up to a competition are known as “Black Out Practices” & absolutely cannot be missed. Any atheltes that miss, do so with the understanding that coaches may make modifications to the routine to better prepare the team for success or in worse case scenario, the athlete may not be able to compete at the upcoming event. Competitions are 100% mandatory.
Membership in the Gems Fundraising Club is open to ALL CHEERLEADING ATHLETES AND FAMILIES at
Gem Athletics! We exist as a separate entity alongside GA to offer the opportunity to raise
money to help cushion the costs of the Cheer Season! Our registration for the Season is
open for returning athletes and anyone new to Gem Athletics this Season.
